What a lovely sojourn, where black was the night, the days filled with birdsong and sightings, and flora and fauna and ancient histories to see and explore. Love that you were there for the meteor shower!

When I was young I backpacked a lot. We’d sleep under the stars. My friends always saw shooting stars and I’d always miss them. Much later, I was in Big Bear, CA in an area that rented cabins mostly in winter, near the ski slopes. I was the only person around in the summer and a bit worried about my safety. One day, I went on a canoe tour with a Parker ranger leading. He mentioned there would be a huge meteor shower that night. I went out at midnight, into the deep darkness. Holy tomole! What a show! An experience I’ll never forget!

Sounds wonderful! I would’ve been worried being alone, too, but sounds like the experience was absolutely worth it! Love this story :)

To be honest, if there had been more people in the area, there would have porch lights, lights on in yards, etc. and the night sky might have been harder to see.

Yes, that would probably be true in an area with cabins. What an experience, though, to be out in the dark, under the stars during a meteor shower! Especially a bigger one, like the Perseids in early August! I imagine that's the one you saw, it's one of the two largest in a year, with up to 60 meteors per hour - if you can see them all :)

Thank you! Yes, I did enjoy every minute of the trip. We will probably have more camping trips, though we tend to plan them last minute; we also have plans for other trips - always nice to get out of the city.

I spent several years living in the four corners area in my 30s, and many years later lived on southwest New Mexico; traveled through Indian country

again; and went on a couple of more recent drives to and from Mexico via the Southwest. Your article and photos brought back so many fantastic memories to this arthritic old lady. Thank you.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad this brought back fond memories for you! I think anyone who has ever spent time in the Four Corners area loves it - such a special place, and I love how quiet it is. Thank you for your comment! :)

What an amazing post, Emese! I really do feel that I am there on the campsite in the desert, and I am falling in love with your surroundings though I have never been to a real desert - outside of my birthplace on the Hungarian flatlands, which isn't really a desert but resembles one, especially in summer, as you know. It's interesting to see how nature is so different in the desert from here in the mountains of Romania, where everything is green now and the hills are dotted with haystacks (and newly bales,) but each is equally beautiful in its' own wild way. Thank you so much for introducing me and others to your fascinating home!

Thank you so, so much, Szilvia! Your comment made my day! It's such a great feeling to know I can make you fall in love with the surroundings I write about, even if you can only imagine it from my words (and photos)! The ultimate compliment to a writer! But again, you already love nature, so it's easy to love other environments than your own surroundings. Yes, the Hungarian flatlands do resemble a desert, with vegetation, though, where you can grow a lot of things, and it has its own charm. I also love your surroundings, and often miss them when I see you post about them. I still smell of freshly cut grass and miss the old-fashioned haystacks that people in and around my old town used to make (now it's bales there, nice to see the haystacks in and around your surroundings). Thank you for your lovely comment!

Thank you, Rachel! :) Yes, it truly is. We should all remember and spend more time in nature, even if not at a campsite.
